Stephen was in the Royal Welsh regiment of the British Army.
He also helped to set up a Facebook group, called Lads Advice, which offered a listening ear and support to men struggling with their mental health.
A statement posted on the Lads Advice page said: ‘It’s with a heavy heart we share that Steve was found last night, but sadly he has passed away.
‘When we first heard he was missing, so many of you rallied – sharing posts, contacting people, doing everything possible to help. That outpouring of care says everything about how much he mattered.
‘Steve was a founding member of the team and leaves a huge gap. We’re honestly devastated.
‘Thank you to everyone for the love and support you’ve shown. Please continue to respect the family’s wishes and allow them the time and space they need.
‘RIP Steve. You were one of the kindest most genuine and caring blokes I’ve met. You will be sorely missed. Until the final RV brother.’
Another former colleague, Reece Bishop, paid tribute to Stephen, saying: ‘RIP, Steve was a great lad within 1 section through training, helped a lot of us get through some of the toughest times. See you at the FRV.’
Sophie McGrath also paid tribute, saying: ‘Fly high Steve, you truly were one of the good ones and a good friend to me in cadets throughout the years!
‘Had so many good memories and laughs. Rest easy mate, your duty is done. Until we meet again, I love you.’
