Coronavirus: EDF Energy ‘deep cleans’ Bristol office and Hinkley Point C site after worker tests positive

Energy giant EDF has “deep cleaned” its office in Bristol after an employee reportedly tested positive for coronavirus.

Bridgewater House in the city centre, which is home to a number of businesses including Barclays, is being cleaned as a precaution – as is EDF’s 111-acre site at Hinkley Point C – the company has said.

Barclays says it has not been affected by the clean and is currently “open for business as usual”.

A spokesperson for EDF confirmed the 35-year-old man, who worked at Bridgewater House in the city, developed coronavirus symptoms two days after leaving the UK.

He is believed to have taken a Cathay Pacific flight from London to Hong Kong on February 27 and then a boat to Shenzhen where he fell unwell and was tested, according to Business Live’s sister site Bristol Live.

An EDF spokesperson said: “Information reported online by the Chinese government said that the individual developed symptoms two days after leaving the UK.

“Public Health England has advised that, based on this information, this person would not have posed an infection risk to colleagues or other contacts in the United Kingdom.

“Public Health England is working with Chinese authorities to verify what has been reported. Should the information be confirmed, Public Health England is working with us to understand how the individual could have become infected.

“To support this, HPC is tracing people who may have been in contact with this individual between 15th and 27th February 2020 to see if they have shown symptoms.”

As a precaution, areas where the individual worked are now being deep cleaned, including the Hinkley Point C site, Bridgewater House (in Bristol) and Hinkley Point C buses.

“We have issued advice to staff on the common sense steps we can all take to minimise our individual risks and will continue to closely monitor the situation,” the spokesperson added.

The news comes after four members of the workforce at the power station were place in self-isolation last week after returning from Italy and Tenerife.

A spokesperson for Barclays added: “As you would expect, the well-being of our employees is our top priority and we are continuing to monitor the situation closely.

“We have also put in place various measures to help protect colleagues working in the building in line with NHS/government recommendations.”
