Whirlpool UK Appliances Ltd, part of Whirlpool Corporation, the world’s largest manufacturer of major home appliances, has selected Axil Integrated Services to deliver innovative total waste management solutions at their UK sites.
Following a competitive tender, the new contract will see Axil maximise value for Whirlpool through increased on-site segregation of materials, enhanced recycling methods and improved trading of recycling commodities. At Whirlpool’s sites in Peterborough and Yate, Axil has already implemented more efficient processes for material handling and have installed improved processing equipment. New welfare facilities have also been installed for the onsite waste operatives. These changes have already provided Whirlpool with increased rebate revenues and improved cost control.
Axil Integrated Services is a leading waste management company and were selected by Whirlpool UK Appliances Ltd because of their innovative, sustainable and cost-effective solution, as well as a transparent approach to pricing and contract management.
Whirlpool has an ambitious target to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2022 – the Axil solution builds on the success already achieved and will deliver increased environmental benefits.
The improved CSR performance is being achieved through:
- Reduction in general waste due to specialist trained on site teams segregating at source
- Regeneration of waste compound and equipment
- Improved on-site processing procedures
- Introduction of low volume plastic bags to reduce plastic waste
- Removal of single use plastics in the canteen areas
- Increase of composting and food waste across sites
- Introducing closed loop systems
- Reduced carbon footprint by using local suppliers
One of the most innovative elements of the contract is Axil’s transparent and ethical approach to commodity management. This ensures that Whirlpool have full visibility of the material values and receive the best possible rebates at all times, creating a partnership approach to their waste management.
Environmentally focused and sustainable processes have been implemented across every aspect of the business, from scrap domestic appliances to the food waste generated in the staff canteens.
Whirlpool is committed to the environment across its global operations. In addition to its zero waste to landfill pledge, it is continually striving to find new, more ecologically friendly components for machines and exploring new green initiatives that reduce the environmental impact of its operations.
This includes joining the #PlasticLess project to reduce marine plastic pollution by investing in ocean bins, or ‘Seabins’, in key sites, including the Portishead Marina, and two busy ports in Italy.
This ethical ethos aligns perfectly with Axil which is focused on delivering environmentally sustainable solutions at the lowest possible cost.
