The ghost headquarters left empty after collapse of developer are set for auction

The headquarters left empty after a building contractor went bust is now heading to auction.

GM Jones, in Llanrwst, had been one of the most successful builders in Conwy county – carrying out commercial and public sector schemes across the region.

It moved into the new £1.3m HQ in 2018 backed by £400,000 from the Wales Economic Fund but then ran into financial problems – falling into administration in March 2019.

Since then the two GM Jones properties at Parc Ty Gwyn, Llanrwst, have been vacant.

Now one of those buildings – the main offices – are set to go to auction this month.

The online auction by Auction House North West will take place on July 16.

The property has a guide price of £425,000.

Janet Finch-Saunders, MS for Aberconwy, said: “The Welsh Government invested £400,000 of taxpayer’s money in what was described as a £1.3m headquarters. I know that both units are not included in the sale, but how can the largest only have a guide price of £425,000?

“It seems that there is a real possibility that the project may have been overvalued in the first instance, and that the Welsh Government carelessly gave too much taxpayer’s pounds to back the scheme.

“Taxpayers deserve to know from Ken Skates MS, Minister for Economy, why £400,000 was given towards the building of a headquarters which is worth almost £900,000 less than the originally advertised value of the project.

“That money could have gone a long way to support the creation of jobs in Llanrwst. Instead, what the Parc Ty Gwyn trouble has seen is 40 individuals lose their livelihoods.”

Welsh Government has previously said it will work with the appointed administrator to ensure maximum potential recovery of any public sector funds provided.

They added that they will not “apologise for supporting Welsh businesses”.
