Open-top tourist bus smashes into tree in central London

Six people had to be rescued after an open top tourist bus collided with a tree in London’s Russell Square this afternoon.

Photos from the scene on Bedford Way show the roof of the bus crumpled after the crash, with windows broken and metal supports pushed aside.

No-one sustained injuries serious enough to require hospital treatment, butparamedics treated patients at the scene.

It happened yards from the Tavistock Square bomb site, where one of the 7/7 bombers detonated an explosive on a bus twenty years ago.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: ‘Police were called at 2.37pm on July 15 following a single vehicle collision on Bedford Way, WC1.

‘The vehicle, a bus was involved in a collision with a tree.

‘Officers attended with the London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade.

‘Those involved sustained minor injuries. The road remains closed.’

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: ‘We were called at 2.35pm today to reports of an incident at the junction of the A4200 and Russell Square, WC1H.

‘We sent an ambulance crew, a paramedic in a fast response car and an incident response officer to the scene.

‘Our first paramedic arrived in five minutes.

‘We assessed two patients and discharged them at the scene.’
