Republican Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene, a supporter of ex-President Donald Trump, introduced a bill to award acquitted Kenosha shooter Kyle Rittenhouse with a congressional gold medal because he ‘protected the community’.

Greene brought the legislation forward on Wednesday, five days after a jury found Rittenhouse not guilty of all charges against him for killing two men and injuring a third during a protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, last year.

HR6070 states that it is intended to ‘award a Congressional Gold Medal to Kyle H Rittenhouse, who protected the community of Kenosha, Wisconsin, during a Black Lives Matter (BLM) riot on August 25, 2020’.

If awarded, it would give Rittenhouse, 18, the same medal that police officers received for protecting the US Capitol during the deadly January 6 riot, as well as American troops killed in Kabul.

It is a long shot for Rittenhouse, as he has been lauded by many conservatives, but also angered progressives who consider his acquittal proof that the criminal justice systems favors white people.

Greene introduced the bill a day after Trump revealed that Rittenhouse visited him at his Mar-a-Lago home after the verdict. Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Tuesday that Rittenhouse ‘wanted to know if he could come over and say hello because he was a fan’.

‘He’s a really good young guy… just left Mar-a-Lago a little while ago, and he should never have been put through that,’ Trump said.

The ex-president added that Rittenhouse should not have had to suffer through his trial.

‘He was going to be dead if he didn’t pull that trigger, that guy that put the gun to his head in one-quarter of a second, he was going to pull the trigger,’ Trump said. ‘Kyle would have been dead.’

Greene on Wednesday shared a photo of Trump, Rittenhouse and the teenager’s mother from the meeting at Mar-a-Lago and said she ‘greatly’ admired them.

‘Kyle thanks Pres Trump for two most important things the left is trying to destroy,’ Greene wrote. ‘We must always uphold our Constitution, defend our 2A (Second Amendment), & stop our enemies who hate them.’
