Shocking scenes from a shooting spree in Russia show students climbing out of windows to escape a gunman.

At least eight people are dead and 10 more are injured after the incident at Perm State University, according to the authorities.

Footage from the scene shows a person holding a weapon outside the university, who was later detained by police at around noon local time.

Regional governor Dmitry Makhonin later said the man had died.

Students were filmed jumping from first-floor windows to escape the building, and landed heavily on the ground before running to safety.

He has been identified by local media as 18-year-old Timur Bekmansurov, who posted on social media shortly before his attack that the university had ‘committed a serious mistake’ four years ago.

The post, which suggested he had serious mental health problems, read: ‘However long I’ve known myself, I’ve always thought of death.

‘I don’t know how many I can kill, but I will do everything to take as many with me as I can.’

People in the university’s auditorium were told to stay where they were and ‘shield’ while the incident was ongoing, and others were evacuated from campus.

Many were said to have barricaded themselves in classrooms, using tables and chairs to block the doors.

Those travelling to the university were told to turn back if they were on their way.

Russia’s Investigative Committee – the agency that handles major crimes – said the gunman had been identified as a student at the university.

Perm University, around 800 miles east of Moscow, is known for its medical excellence and is one of the oldest universities in Russia.

Russia has strict restrictions on firearm ownership, but some categories of guns are available for purchase for hunting, self-defence or sport.

Residents must meet certain criteria and pass several tests before being allowed to own guns.

In May this year a school shooting in southwest Russia saw seven children killed.

Two gunmen opened fire inside the building in the city of Kazan. One was shot dead by police after taking several pupils hostage.
