Today, the nation will come together to remember the men and women who sacrificed their lives in conflicts around the world.

Remembrance Day is held annually on November 11 to mark the end of the First World War, while Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday of the month and seen as the official day of commemoration.

Remembrance is a time of reflection for many who lost family members and friends during the First and Second World Wars – and a time for others to honour the sacrifice of the millions who died in these conflicts.

But it is also a time to commemorate those killed in conflicts since then.

A two-minute silence will be held, and a Remembrance Day parade will follow. Here’s everything you need to know about timings, as well as road closures across London for the parade this year.

What time is the two-minute silence today?

A national two-minute silence will be held at 11am today, coinciding with the time in 1918 when the First World War came to an end.

The beginning of the silence is usually marked by the firing of guns from the King’s Troop on Horse Guards Parade in London.

No tickets or passes are needed to attend the Remembrance Sunday parade in London, but you’ll want to arrive early at Whitehall and Parliament Street, as entry will eventually be limited if the area becomes full.

Video screens will be erected around the Cenotaph, near the Green in front of the statue of Field Marshal Montgomery, outside Dover House, close to the junction of Whitehall Place, and on the corner of King Charles Street.

What are the timings for the parade and service?

Whitehall will open to the public at 8am, although the official Gov website warns that ‘space will be limited’ and visitors will need to allow time to clear the police security procedures.

From 10.30am, the military will form up on the Cenotaph and participants will be processed out to the Cenotaph at 10.50am before the two-minute silence at 11am.

Following the two-minute silence, the Cenotaph Service will begin, wherein wreaths are laid at the foot of the Cenotaph memorial by members of Parliament as well as religious leaders, members of the Royal Family, and more.

At around 11.25am, the Cenotaph service concludes, and the Royal British Legion detachments disperse past the Cenotaph while veterans and eligible participants begin their march.

Members of the Royal Family, including King Charles, and the Prime Minister usually participate in the service, as well as other politicians like MPs.

London road closures and how to travel to the service

For the Remembrance Sunday parade, several roads will be closed around the immediate area.

Great George Street will be closed to the public, and access between Victoria Street and St James Park will be via Storey’s Gate.
