Almost 30 years ago, I fled the Rwandan genocide – now I fight for refugee women’s rights
‘Someone wants to see you.’
The priest who had been sheltering me during the violent Rwandan genocide in 1994 ushered someone over.
It was my brother-in-law – a Belgian soldier – who lived in Belgium with my sister. He’d come to take me, my parents, my sister and our children to Europe with him.
I immediately felt relief. It was the best moment of my life.
