Andrew’s position in the line of succession now he’s not a Prince

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been stripped of his titles following increasing pressure over his links with Jeffrey Epstein.

Following a discussion with the King, it was announced that the disgraced royal will no longer be known as the Duke of York, or as a prince. He’s also been struck from the roll of peerage.

The change will mark a new era for the royal family, as it is unlikely the public will ever see Andrew next to the King or other senior

But despite his fall from grace, Andrew will still hold his place in the line of succession.

Majesty Magazine’s managing editor Joe Little said Andrew is eighth in line to the throne.

He told PA: ‘I’m sure at some point quite soon, somebody will ask, if they’ve not already done so, why he hasn’t been moved from the line of succession.

‘Clearly, it would take quite a catastrophe for him to become king, given all those who are ahead of him. So might it not have been tidier to withdraw him from the line of succession?’

What is the line of succession for the royal family?

Prince William is first in line, while Prince Andrew and Prince Harry remain in the royal rankings despite controversies around them.

Charles, who was the Prince of Wales and the late Elizabeth II’s heir, is now King.

When Elizabeth II died back in September 2022, all those below Charles moved up one place, with William, the new Prince of Wales, now the heir to the throne.

Prince George is now second in line, followed by his sister Princess Charlotte and then Prince Louis, who are third and fourth in line, respectively.

Harry, the Duke of Sussex, who quit as a senior working royal and moved to the US in 2020, still retains his succession rights despite stepping away from the monarchy – he is currently fifth in line.

His son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor is sixth in line – moving up from his position as seventh-in-line when he was born in 2019.

Archie’s sister, Lilibet ‘Lili’ Mountbatten-Windsor, jumps into her brother’s old position.

Andrew is behind her, despite stepping down from royal duties and now essentially banished from royal life.

His eldest daughter, Princess Beatrice, moves to ninth in line, while her baby girl, Sienna Mapelli Mozzi, born in September 2021, is now 10th in line.

Where will Andrew live now?

Andrew Windsor Mountbatten will no longer be able to live in the sprawling Royal Lodge on the grounds of Windsor – so where will he go?

One option that’s been suggested is York Cottage, a royal stately home in the grounds of Sandringham Estate, where the Queen’s beloved Norfolk home, Sandringham House, is situated.

Ironically, York Cottage used to be known as the Bachelor’s Cottage, so it could be quite fitting for Andrew.

It was gifted by the future King Edward VII, then the Prince of Wales, to his son Prince George, the Duke of York (later King George V) in 1893.

A former prince, now a commoner

His Majesty’s younger brother – who will now only be referred to as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor – had all his remaining titles and privileges removed after his friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein and the rape allegations made by Virginia Giuffre.

Buckingham Palace confirmed last night that the disgraced royal has been stripped of being a prince and will be kicked out of his Royal Lodge home.

It is understood that Charles had the support of the Prince and Princess of Wales in the decision, and that Andrew did not object to the process.

Reacting to the news, the family of Andrew’s alleged victim, Ms Giuffre, said she had ‘brought down a prince’.

She was one of the most outspoken accusers of convicted sex offenders Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, his former girlfriend.

She alleged they trafficked her for Andrew when she was 17, which he has strenuously denied.
