A man is in hospital after he was shot by the Secret Service just five minutes away from the White House.

Authorities said the man was armed and had a ‘conforntation’ with law enforcement just after midnight on Sunday morning.

The suspect remains in hospital and his condition is currently unknown.

The Secret Service said local police were aware of a ‘suicidal individual’ who had been travelling to Washington DC from Indiana, but it’s unclear if this was the same individual.

Spokesperson anthony Guiglielmi said: ‘As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm, and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel.’

The Secret Service said a 51-year-old man claimed he was armed and moved ‘aggressively’ towards an officer who shot him once.

The White House was not breached and no-one under Secret Service protection was in danger, Tom Sullivan, former chief of the Secret Service Uniformed Division, said.

The District of Columbia fire department said the man suffered serious or possibly critical injuries.
