A teenager has been sentenced to three years in custody after taking a knife to school and assaulting a student and member of staff.

The then 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, arrived at a secondary school in Bedfordshire at around 1.40pm on May 2 armed with a kitchen knife hidden in a bag.

He forced a pupil into some toilets before threatening and assaulting them.

The teenager then struck the blade at the hand of a member of staff who locked a gate to prevent him from escaping.

The now 17-year-old was sentenced today at Luton Crown Court.

He was also given a restraining order banning him from entering the school.

DI Kim Caddy, who led the investigation, said: ‘We recognize how frightening this incident must have been for the students and staff, and we commend the school for their swift response and continued support throughout our investigation.

‘Picking up a knife is a reckless decision that carries serious consequences, especially when it’s used to spread fear and threaten the safety of others.

‘While we will always ensure those who carry knives are held accountable, we are equally focused on prevention, and will continue our joint efforts with schools, partners and communities to deter young people from violence and keep knives out of their hands.’
