Final text of British woman found dead in suitcase ‘said she wanted to be alone’

The final texts sent from the phone of a British woman whose body was found in a suitcase in Greece said she wanted to be alone.

But police in the country believe this was an attempted cover-up by her killers.

Elisabeth Jane Ross, from Scotland, was found dead in the Kypseli district in Athens on Saturday.

The final messages sent from the 38-year-old’s phone to her family asked them to leave her alone, Greek investigators say, but detectives believe the texts were sent by her murderers to buy time.

The texts claim she ‘needed some time to herself’ and that she ‘wanted to be alone for a while’, according to media outlets in the country.

Her phone is still missing but remained active at the same time her death was publicly confirmed by detectives.

Police told Greek media: ‘The phone was being used. Text messages were even sent obviously with a view to making people believe she was still alive. 

‘The suitcase did not belong to the victim, as she did not have any large luggage with her.

‘This means that it is possible that genetic material or fingerprints will be found in the suitcase that will help the authorities find the perpetrator or perpetrators.’

A homeless man found Elisabeth’s body after following a ‘bad smell’ into an empty building. He then saw something coming out of a suitcase which ‘looked like a human limb’.

Elisabeth had flown from America to Greece on June 29 and was staying in Athens with friends.

Police believe she was killed on July 15.

Her father has been informed of her death as detectives try to figure out her last known movements and the people she was with.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: ‘We are aware of the death of a Scottish woman in Athens and are liaising with authorities in Greece.

‘Officers are providing support to her family in Scotland.’

An FDCO spokesperson said: ‘Our thoughts are with Elisabeth’s family during this difficult time.

‘We are providing consular support and are in contact with the local authorities.’
