California unemployment claims soar to highest since April
California claims for unemployment benefits jumped to their highest level in six months as the beleaguered job market continues to struggle with the holidays just weeks away.
Workers statewide filed 80,700 first-time unemployment claims during the week ending Oct. 16, up 17,600 from the 63,100 initial claims filed during the week ending Oct. 9, the U.S. Labor Department reported.
