Cambridge Dictionary picks word of the year – and it’s inspired by Taylor Swift

The chosen word, “parasocial,” reflects a modern phenomenon that the Cambridge University Press & Assessment believes has become increasingly visible in today’s celebrity-driven digital age. 

In its official definition, the organization describes it as “a connection that someone feels between themselves and a famous person they do not know, a character in a book, film, TV series, etc., or an artificial intelligence.”

While the term has existed in media studies for decades, Cambridge notes that Swift’s massive fandom has brought the concept into renewed public consciousness.

According to Cambridge, “Millions of fans related to Taylor Swift’s confessional lyrics about dating, heartbreak and desire.”

Fans often speak of her music as if they were confiding in a friend, a sign that an emotional attachment, one that mirrors genuine relationships, has formed over time.

This emotional closeness reached new heights when Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce confirmed their engagement. As Cambridge highlighted, “When Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement, many fans felt a deep connection to the singer and American footballer, even though most had never met them.” 

The couple’s announcement triggered a wave of global reactions, showing how personal the milestone felt to millions.
