Two people were injured after a car ploughed into a bus stop queue leaving devastation in its wake in north London

Passengers on the morning school run and commute ‘ran for their lives’ after a black Ford Focus smashed into the stop before flipping onto its roof.

Witnesses described how the car came careering round a slight bend on a fast stretch of the North Circular at just before 8am.

Rico Kwame told Metro: ‘People ran for their lives when they saw the car coming. The car came quickly, this is a terrible stretch of the road everyone goes very fast and there is a slight bend.

‘It hit the bus stop and caused carnage. The ambulances came and two people looked as if they were injured. The driver of the car got out and even though it had flipped over they seemed physically ok but maybe in shock, it was carnage. The bus stop was completely wiped out.

‘People were inches from death it’s a miracle no one was killed.’

Police and ambulances were scrambled to the scene and part of the North Circular closed as paramedics treated the injured.

They are appealing for witnesses and carrying out tests to assess how fast the car was travelling.

The incident caused huge rush hour tailbacks on the busy stretch of the road heading towards central London.

A mum-of-two who lives near the accident scene said: ‘School kids use that stop including my children sometimes, it’s peak time to get to school or work.

‘Everybody scattered when the car came towards them there were a lot of people who looked in shock and two people looked injured. That stretch of road is a death trap. It’s no place for a bus stop to be honest. There was another accident there just two days ago.’

Images from the immediate aftermath show the Ford Focus on its side with the bus shelter left a mangled wreck.

Another witness said: ‘I heard a massive crash and looked out of my window and saw a car flipped over and people running.

‘I think maybe they thought the car may explode after the impact or something. Everybody looked in shock and the paramedics were quickly there and helping people.’

The bus shelter, which serves the 112 route towards Ealing in west London, was taped off by police.

People who live nearby said a lorry was in collision with a vehicle at the same spot last week, triggering calls for traffic calming measures.

The speed limit at the accident dual carriageway black spot, which is near shops and homes, is 40mph.

A London Ambulance Spokesperson said: ‘We were called at 7:56am today (29 June) to reports of a road traffic collision on the North Circular Road, NW10.

‘We sent resources to the scene including two ambulance crews and an incident response officer. We treated two patients at the scene and took them to a local hospital.’
