Drivers face long delays on the M25 after a serious collision in Surrey today during the extreme heatwave.

The incident happened at junction J6 Godstone south of Caterham this morning.

A huge road closure stretches clockwise from the M25 in Surrey to Kent onto the M26.

Footage from the scene appears to show a tent erected on the side of the road.

Motorists were seen stepping out of their cars onto the searing road as traffic is being held, which the emergency services strongly advise against.

One motorist caught in the M25 closure said he missed his first flight in 50 years after the ‘horrific’ crash.

‘No point stressing, some poor soul might not be going home today,’ he said.

National Highways said the motorway is currently blocked in both directions while an air ambulance works at the scene.
