Fresh from the success of “Sunshine” with Maris Racal, which recently bagged awards at Berlinale and enjoyed a month-long run in the Philippines, another Elijah Canlas project is set to shine on the global stage.

“Water Sports,” directed by Whammy Alcazaren, has secured an official spot at the New York Film Festival (NYFF).

In an Instagram post, producer Alemberg Ang shared his excitement: “We’re so happy to announce that Water Sports got into the Currents section of the New York Film Festival. We’re so psyched to be going back to NYFF to present another Whammy Alcazaren short in the festival.”

Ang also reflected on the behind-the-scenes realities of filmmaking, writing in a separate post that producing “can actually be quite lonely at times.” He expressed gratitude for fellow independent producers, saying these connections keep him grounded despite many moving abroad.

But the NYFF slot is just the beginning for “Water Sports.” The film is set to travel to a total of six international festivals, a feat the team proudly announced on social media.

Alongside its New York debut, the short will screen at Minikino Film Week in Bali, Kyiv International Short Film Festival in Ukraine, Drama International Short Film Festival in Greece, BUT Film Festival in the Netherland, Binisaya Film Festival in Cebu and Silhouette Festival in Paris.

“Thanks to our super hardworking sales agent @squareeyesfilm_ for making all these happen!” Ang wrote, adding a heartfelt note: “Wishing you were here to celebrate with us, Ricky! And… there will be more still waiting for their official announcements!”

Set in a world ravaged by climate change, “Water Sports” follows Jelson and Ipe, two students deeply in love, as they prepare mind and body for survival.

Guided by their teacher’s belief that strength of heart and mind can overcome any challenge, they soon discover that perhaps the truest way to endure the apocalypse is to simply live, laugh and love.
