Family of boy thrown 100ft from Tate Modern issue update on his condition

The boy who was thrown from the 10th-storey viewing platform at the Tate Modern has finally been discharged from hospital.

The French child sustained very serious injuries after falling 100ft from the gallery’s top floor balcony, including several broken bones and bleeding on the brain.

In January, his family provided an update that he remained in a rehabilitation center as he was still unable to walk in what they said was a ‘sad step backward’ in his recovery.

However, the now 13-year-old has since been allowed to leave hospital and returned to school last month, his family confirmed.

While he has taken his first steps as a walker, his left leg remains weak since he had surgery, they added.

He is spending the summer taking adapted swimming lessons and celebrated his discharge from hospital with a paragliding session and a trip to the beach with his friends.

The boy is also taking maths tutoring classes to catch up on the months of school he has missed.

In an update shared on GoFundMe, the family wrote: ‘We wanted to let you know that our little knight has finally left the hospital!

‘His hospital stay was kept as short as possible because, despite our daily presence and encouragement, our son was becoming deeply disheartened and kept asking when he could go back to class and see his friends.

‘It was a great joy for him to return to school shortly before the summer holidays; since the lessons were well-tailored to his needs and challenges, he was able to start learning again, and reuniting with his teachers and classmates put a smile back on his face.’

The letter added: ‘To celebrate the end of his hospital treatment, we were lucky enough to treat him to a tandem paragliding flight and sign him up for a short getaway with his friends from the Éclaireurs de France and his special needs educator. He was thus able to go to the seaside for a week, with a pirate theme!

‘It will certainly be a busy summer. We are going to try to fully recharge his batteries (and our own) before the start of the school year, and to get back to a family routine as normal as possible.

‘Thank you so much. We could not do so much for our child without your wonderful support.’

The youngster was just six years old when he was thrown off the building by then 17-year-old Jonty Bravery in August 2019.

Bravery suffered from a mixed personality disorder and was in social services accommodation but had been allowed to leave the home alone at the time of the incident.

A court heard that he intended to select and kill someone.

He was sentenced to 15 years in prison for attempted murder in 2020.

Bravery faced another trial earlier this year in which he was jailed for 16 weeks for assaulting two nurses at the high-security Broadmoor Hospital, Berkshire, in 2024.
