Fil-Am mayor calls for peace after Knicks fans attack Spurs supporters

LOS ANGELES – In the wake of a violent incident following Game 3 of the NBA Finals,  Gina Ortiz Jones – the Filipino American mayor of San Antonio, Texas – called for peace and solidarity among fans.

As excitement builds for Game 4, local leaders and NBA players are expressing their alarm over the incident that took place outside Madison Square Garden.

Disturbing video footage circulating online shows a Spurs fan being surrounded and brutally attacked by a group of Knicks supporters while walking down a street in Manhattan.

The video shows the Spurs fan’s jersey forcibly torn off, then he was kicked and stomped by the crowd.

New York police have launched an investigation to identify the individuals involved in the assault.

Mayor Ortiz Jones voiced her deep concern in a recent video, condemning the violence.

Following Game 3 Monday night, several people were arrested after a Knicks watch party in Manhattan turned chaotic – two for assaulting a police officer – and others were issued criminal court summonses

Police said that five officers were injured.

In a statement, the New York Police Department said that “the crowd became increasingly rowdy, violent, and destructive, and there were many incidents of disorderly and dangerous behavior.”

Members of the crowd “engaged in incredibly reckless behavior — there were large physical and violent fights that resulted in multiple injuries,” the statement said.
