Flames were seen above the building just after 1am

A fire broke out at an exclusive members’ club in Kensington early this morning, prompting twelve fire engines and dozens of firefighters to descend upon the quiet street.

The £250-a-month Kensington Roof Gardens Members’ Club, just off the High Street, was seen burning around 1am this morning.

Fire crews battled the flames for almost three hours before bringing them under control.

Office workers in the building below were forced to evacuate and stand in the cold for hours as the fire brigade worked.

London Fire Brigade said: ‘Part of the rooftop bar area of the nine-storey building was alight.

‘One of the Brigade’s 32-meter turntable ladders was used at the scene as an observation tower to provide the Incident Commander with an aerial view of the fire.

‘The first call was received at 00.57, and Control Officers mobilised crews from Kensington, Hammersmith, Chelsea and surrounding fire stations to the scene. The fire was under control by 0336.’

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but some office workers in the building have been told not to come in due to smoke exposure.
