Two Filipino films starring actress Gina Pareño are set to make their global debut at the 48th Moscow International Film Festival.
Directed by Adolfo Alix Jr., the films “Pila (Queue)” and “Poon (The Hallowed)” will both make their world premiere at the festival, which runs from April 16 to 23 in Moscow, Russia.
“Poon” also stars Pinoy Big Brother Collab Season 1 second big placer Will Ashley, alongside Kelvin Miranda, Althea Ablan and Joao Constancia, with production involving scenes shot in Pampanga.
The director highlighted the significance of veteran actress Pareño, who takes on pivotal roles in both projects.
In a Facebook post, he described her as a defining figure in Philippine cinema, writing, “A true icon never stops shining. The legendary Gina Pareño makes history with two films premiering at the prestigious Moscow International Film Festival this month, showcasing the incredible talent that has made her a pillar of Philippine Cinema.”
Alix further emphasized Pareño’s versatility, noting how she delivers two contrasting performances across the films.
In “Pila,” she portrays a woman enduring long lines at a government office in order to seek financial assistance for her sick husband. The film is particularly notable for its ambitious single-take format.
In contrast, “Poon” sees Pareño taking on the role of a powerful matriarch who may be hiding a dark secret surrounding the death of her husband.
Alix praised her performances further, stating that her work in both films reflects her lasting impact on the industry. “To witness her command the screen in such diverse roles is a testament to her enduring greatness. Like fine wine, Tita Gina only becomes better, bolder, and brighter with time. Salute!”
