Two people have been arrested after the death of a two-year-old girl on Teesside.

Officers were called to an address in Thornaby on Saturday afternoon after concerns for the child’s welfare were reported.

She was taken to hospital where she later died.

The suspects are a 25-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man, both of whom have been held for questioning.

The girl’s death is currently being treated as unexplained and investigations are underway.

Forensics teams were still working at the scene on Sunday.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: ‘Our thoughts are with the family of the child during this very difficult time.’
