Jay Slater told his friend he was ‘not going to make it’ in a heartbreaking final Snapchat message before his death.
The 19-year-old disappeared in Tenerife in June 2024 after visiting the island for the NRG music festival.
He was later found to have fallen after attempting a 14-hour walk back to his accommodation in Los Cristianos from the mountain village of Masca, after a night of drinking and drugs.
Jay’s family are set to speak for the first time since his death in an upcoming Channel 4 documentary, the Sun reported.
An inquest earlier this year found that Jay had sent messages and spoke to his friends as he attempted the long hike, to inform them his phone battery was running out and that he had no water.
However his mother Debbie revealed that she had uncovered an unsent Snapchat message to his friend Bradley Geoghegan.
She said Bradley had been given a fright after suddenly receiving the note intended for him after she logged into her son’s account.
The message read: ‘Listen, I’m not going to make it’.
Jay was last pictured on CCTV at 3.07am in the Tramps nightclub following a night of partying.
He was driven to Masca and then sent a clip of himself outside his Airbnb a few hours later.
It remains unknown why he left the rental home, before ending up in a ravine in Rural de Teno national park.
Spanish authorities suggested that the 19-year-old may have headed towards the sea in the hope of finding a beach from where he could seek help.
Senior coroner Dr James Adeley said Jay had fallen in a ‘particularly dangerous area in difficult terrain’.
He said: ‘‘He fell approximately 20 to 25 meters, suffering skull fractures and brain trauma from which he would have died instantaneously. Jay Dean Slater died an accidental death.
‘This is a tragic death of a young man.’
Jay left the road as temperatures rose that day, the coroner added.
A 29-day police search for Jay involved helicopters, dogs, drones and rescue teams.
His body was eventually discovered in the Juan Lopez ravine, an area known for having such dense vegetation that it can only be accessed with a machete knife.
Traces of cocaine, ketamine and ecstasy, as well as alcohol were found in his blood.
