BURBANK – Netflix’s hit “Kpop Demon Hunters” and Pixar’s “Elio” were among the top nominees announced Monday for the 53rd Annie Awards, recognizing the year’s top animated productions.

Both were nominated in the top category of best feature, along with GKIDS’ “Little Amélie or the Character of Rain,” Disney’s “Zootopia 2,” and Dreamworks’ “The Bad Guys 2.”

All of those films were also nominated for best character animation in a feature film. “Kpop Demon Hunters” also scored nods in categories including best direction, best character design, best music, writing, production design and voice acting.

“Kpop Demon Hunters” and “Elio” both earned 10 overall nominations to lead the pack.

On the small screen, “South Park” was among the nominees for best “mature” TV/media program, along with “Bob’s Burgers,” “Common Side Effects,” “Haha, You Clowns” and “Il Baracchino.”

Nominated for best children’s TV/media were “My Melody & Kuromi,” “Spice Frontier: Escape from Veltegar,” “Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball” and “Wylde Pak.”

The Annie Awards, sponsored by ASIFA-Hollywood, will be presented Feb. 21 at UCLA’s Royce Hall.

During the ceremony, Winsor McCay lifetime achievement awards will be presented to Oscar-winning animator/writer/director Michael Dudok de Wit, Oscar winners Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, and Oscar nominated writer/director Chris Sanders.

The June Foray Award for impact on the animation community will be presented to producer Sandy Rabins, who founded the AnimAID effort to support people in the industry affected by the Los Angeles wildfires. The Ub Iwerks Award for technical advancement will be given to Wacom and a special achievement award will be presented to LightBox Expo, an annual animation convention.
