LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Police Department intensified its presence around places of worship throughout the city in the immediate aftermath of Thursday’s deadly shooting at a Michigan synagogue.

“We are closely monitoring the situation, and at this preliminary stage, there is no known threat to Los Angeles,” according to an LAPD statement. “The LAPD remains vigilant and committed to protecting our diverse communities. Out of an abundance of caution, the department has increased visible patrols around houses of worship and associated schools, as well as cultural centers across the city.

“The LAPD will continue working with our local, state, national, and international partners to monitor developments and ensure the safety of all Angelenos. Together, we stand united against hate and violence in all its forms.”

Police and sheriff’s deputies were already on heightened alert around synagogues and other sensitive sites in light of the war with Iran.

“We are monitoring the situation in Michigan, along with other incidents across the nation and the conflict in the Middle East and continuing to engage our federal and local law enforcement partners to share intelligence,” according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on Thursday. “At this time, there are no credible threats in LA County.

“The department continues to be in a heightened state of readiness and increased vigilance as we continue to protect our residents of Los Angeles County. Due to recent events and in recognition of current religious observances, the department has continued increased patrols around places of worship, cultural institutions, and other prominent locations throughout LA County.

Additionally, the department has cultural liaisons who work directly with community members to address concerns and foster engagement.”

On Thursday afternoon, a man rammed a truck through the front doors of the synagogue northwest of downtown Detroit and then exchanged gunfire with a security guard, said Michael Bouchard, sheriff of Oakland County, Michigan.

The assailant was killed in the shootout, and the guard suffered non-life-threatening injuries from being struck by the attacker’s vehicle, the sheriff told news crews.

No members of the temple, which includes a childcare center, were hurt during the ordeal, officials said.

In San Diego, the police will also provide an intensified presence around places of worship throughout the city.

“The San Diego Police Department is aware of the reported attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan,” SDPD officials stated in an online post. “In response, we will be increasing patrols around places of worship throughout the city. Our goal is to ensure all members of our religious communities here in San Diego are safe to gather and practice their faith.” (CNS)
