Filipino broadway icon Lea Salonga’s backstage ritual comes with a dose of K-pop energy.

Currently in Singapore for “Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular,” the acclaimed Filipina performer revealed that she leans on BTS’ music as part of her pre-show ritual.

In an interview with Channel NewsAsia, Salonga shared how she recently tuned into “The Comeback Live | Arirang” livestream on Netflix just moments before heading onstage.

“So last weekend, BTS’ album, Arirang, just dropped. And our tour manager [who is] sitting over there is also a massive fan. I just listen to their music all the time anyway. It’s a great way to erase my head,” she said, explaining how their sound helps clear her mind before a performance.

Her connection to BTS dates back to the early days of the pandemic, when she first encountered the group and quickly found comfort in their music. She recalled, “I found them over the pandemic, and they just brought me so much joy, so I stuck with them.”

Since then, Salonga has remained a dedicated listener, embracing the same enthusiasm shared by millions of ARMYs worldwide.

Adjusting her schedule for the livestream

That dedication recently took center stage in her own routine. With a tight schedule ahead of her performance, Salonga adjusted her warm-up timing just to catch the livestream.

“Last weekend, they had a Netflix drop. It started at 7 o’clock, my show was at 8pm, and I timed the warmup. I moved everything back by 15 minutes so that I could end right as the show was about to start. It was important and I have priorities. So, I made sure of that, turned on my iPad so that was my pre-show ritual,” she shared.

She described how she immediately transitioned into performance mode, energized by the experience. “The minute the show ended, I got up my chair, marched on stage and started doing my own show,” she said, adding, “I had so much adrenaline and happiness. I had the dopamine.”

Salonga is currently starring as Madame Thénardier in the Singapore staging of “Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular,” which runs at the Sands Theatre from March 24 to May 10 for a limited seven-week season.
