Liza Soberano is addressing comments about her career being laos (has-been), sharing how difficult it has been to hear such labels while she is rebuilding her path internationally.
The Filipino American actress, who has been based in Los Angeles since 2024, spoke candidly on Edward Barber’s “Painfully Human Podcast” about the challenges of starting over in a new industry and the sacrifices that come with it.
“It really hurt me when people would say, ‘Oh, laos na siya. We don’t see her anywhere. She’s only doing these small little influencer gigs.’”
Being a new artist in LA
For Liza, these remarks come at a time when she is intentionally stepping back from mainstream visibility to focus on training and growth as a new artist in Hollywood.
“I think moving to LA, obviously, money is the biggest thing that I’ve sacrificed,” she shared.
She explained that before leaving the Philippines, she already had a stable and highly successful career with consistent projects and endorsements. However, she chose to leave that behind to pursue long-term goals in acting on an international stage.
“I could be easily just doing that and still making the same amount of money that I used to, but that’s what I sacrificed to be living in LA and in discomfort.,” she said. “Now that I’m here, I’m a new artist, so I’m going through all the new artist things.”
Soberano also clarified that the smaller jobs she takes on are part of her reality as she continues to build her career abroad.
“That’s how I stay alive. I’m not making as much money as I did before… I have to do all these little gigs every now and then because that’s how I pay my bills.”
Despite the financial adjustment, she said the experience has given her a sense of clarity and personal growth that she didn’t have before.
“I’m based in LA now. I’ve been living there for two years since 2024,” she said. “I’ve just been in LA taking my acting classes, taking vocal lessons, working.”
Beyond career changes, she further shared that living in Los Angeles has also shifted her mindset, allowing her to step back from online pressures and see life in a broader perspective.
