A major road has closed in both directions after a serious crash near Milton Keynes.
A stretch of the A5 is closed in both directions after a collision at the Old Stratford roundabout at the Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire border this afternoon.
The A5 is blocked off from the A508 to A422 Monks Way (Abbey Hill roundabout) after the smash at about 2.30pm.
Drivers were told to ‘avoid the area’ and expect delays as the closure is likely ‘for some time,’ the police warned.
The police said: ‘The A5 is CLOSED in both directions (northbound & southbound) between Old Stratford Roundabout and Abbey Hill Roundabout (A422).
‘Please avoid the area – delays expected. Use alternative routes where possible.
‘We anticipate the closure will be in place for some time.’
Thames Valley Police told Metro: ‘We are advising motorists to avoid the area at this time.
‘We cannot speculate as to when the road might reopen, but would urge people to check our social media Milton Keynes Facebook page for updates.
‘We will provide details of injuries when we are able to.’
A woman, who drove past the scene shortly after the crash happened, told Metro: ‘The traffic light had been mowed down completely and there was debris across all three lanes, and there was a car in the middle of the roundabout completely mangled, it looks like someone has gone across the roundabout and crashed into the traffic light and through the trees.’
It is understood that the A5 is also closed all the way from the Old Stratford roundabout to Towcester, according to the National Highways traffic map.
Nearby A508 is also closed, traffic analyst Inrix warned.
It said: ‘All routes towards Old Stratford are affected.’
One driver said on social media the incident ‘looked very bad’ after news of the crash emerged.
She said: ‘Seen this just as after it happened, looked very bad, praying all involved are ok.’
Another said they saw a helicopter attending to the scene.
Traffic in the area could be busier than usual as people head home after the weekend, school half term and a classic car show held in Stony Stratford.
