A man who had three child passengers with him in the car when he crashed has been charged with trying to kill them.

Tancredo Bankhardt, 40, from Great Yarmouth, is accused of attempted murder over the three-car crash on the A146 between Hales and Loddon shortly after 8.30pm on September 26.

Police said officers had received a call less than an hour before the collision, raising concerns for the safety of a man and three children.

They tried to find the blue Vauxhall Astra and speak with Bankhardt before the smash, they added.

Norfolk Police said it has referred itself to watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to the prior contact, as is standard procedure.

The three children were all taken to hospital.

One was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge where they remain, police said.

Another child was also taken to Addenbrooke’s, where they remain, while the third has been discharged from hospital in Norwich.

The male drivers of the two other cars involved in the three-vehicle collision, a red Honda and a black Audi, were taken to hospital in Norwich.

One is still being treated for serious injuries and the other has been discharged.

In addition to the three counts of attempted murder, Bankhardt is also charged with one count of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, one count of assault, and one count of engaging in controlling or coercive behavior.

He is due to appear before Norwich Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
