Man killed after being hit by police car responding to 999 call

A man has been killed after a police car collided with a pedestrian.

The incident happened in Acocks Green, Birmingham, just before 7pm on Wednesday.

A marked police car was responding to a 999 call after the force were alerted to a man carrying knives on Warwick Road.

The pedestrian, a man in his 40s, died at the scene. The two officers in the police car were unhurt.

West Midlands Police said the family of the victim is being supported, and that they are in contact with the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

The force added other officers attended the report of the man carrying knives, but did not find any signs of disorder when they arrived.

They asked anyone with dashcam or other footage to get in touch.

An IOPC spokesperson said: ‘We can confirm that we have started an investigation into the circumstances of a road traffic incident where a West Midlands Police vehicle was involved in a collision with a pedestrian in Birmingham last night (19 March).

‘We have been advised that the collision took place at around 7pm on Yardley Road in Acocks Green when the police vehicle is reported to have been responding to an emergency call.

‘The pedestrian, a man believed to be in his 40s, sustained fatal injuries and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

‘We sent investigators to the scene and post-incident process to begin gathering evidence. Our investigation is in the very early stages.

‘Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends and all of those affected by this tragic incident.’
