A Long Island man who was allegedly stabbed to death by his own son told the authorities ‘I’m being murdered’ in a chilling 911 call he was able to make before his death.
Edward Brown, 69, suffered more than 40 stab wounds to the chest, torso and neck after Sage Arias-Brown 33, is alleged to have entered his studio apartment in Mastic, Suffolk County, in the early hours of September 7.
According to a statement from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, a neighbor of Edward’s heard a loud bang at around 12.30am, as reported by People.
Edward then made the desperate 911 call as he was being attacked, during which he was heard screaming: ‘I’m being murdered. What are you doing to me, Sage?’
Arias-Brown, who according to New York Post was seen leaving his father’s apartment minutes later, was arrested half a mile away.
Authorities responding to the call found Edward inside the apartment unresponsive and ‘covered in blood’.
He was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts by police and emergency medical staff to save him.
Arias-Brown has since been charged with second-degree murder and is being held without bail.
He is due to appear in court again on October 21, and faces 25 years to life in prison if he is found guilty.
‘This defendant is accused of viciously taking the life of his 69-year-old father as the victim desperately called the police for help,’ District Attorney Raymond A Tierney said in a press release.
‘The facts in this case are heartbreaking. This indictment is an important step towards holding the defendant accountable for the brutal violence he allegedly inflicted on his own parent.’
Edward was described in his obituary as a ‘a seeker, a philosopher, and a lifelong learner, a deeply spiritual man with a gentle and restless soul.
‘He had a remarkable ability to see the best in everyone around him, and a gift for helping others recognize the best within themselves’.
The obituary went on: ‘We ask that you think of Ed fondly when you do something that makes your heart happy, whether it be listening to live music, singing one of your favourite songs or walking at the ocean or perhaps in the woods.’
As well as his two other sons Jonah and Jesse, Edward is survived by his brother, Matthew, sister-in-law, nephew, niece, great-niece and two great-nephews.
