Now in its fifth year, the SDFFF stands as a highlight event of Filipino American History Month, organized by the San Diego Filipino Cinema (SDFC).

The festival continues to champion Filipino stories, showcasing cinema as a vital medium for representation, education and cultural expression.

A post collaborated with SDFFF on their social media account reads, “Beauty. Talent. Humble. Smart. MARIS RACAL LIT UP the SAN DIEGO FILIPINO FILM FESTIVAL! @sdfilipinocinema. Where beauty meets strength and art meets emotion. Raw. Emotional. Powerful. Her performance in SUNSHINE left San Diegans speechless!”

Meanwhile, in one of her latest Instagram Stories, Racal shared a “good news” update revealing that the film, which tackles the sensitive issue of abortion, is now being screened in select Philippine schools, including Kalayaan National High School.

“Let’s continue to hope and pray that more schools will allow their students to watch Sunshine, or reach out to inquire about it,” Racal wrote, emphasizing the film’s educational and social relevance.

Although “Sunshine” was among the strong contenders shortlisted as the Philippines’ official entry to the Oscars, it did not clinch the spot. Still, its impact has been undeniable. The film has enjoyed sold-out screenings, sparked meaningful discussions and gained international recognition.

Earlier this year, “Sunshine” won the Crystal Bear for Best Film in the Generation 14plus section at the Berlinale, marking a major milestone for Filipino cinema.

The film’s momentum continued at the Osaka Asian Film Festival 2025, where Racal received a Special Mention for her heartfelt and powerful performance.

Adding to its global journey, “Sunshine” has also secured North American distribution through Indiecan Entertainment, a deal announced at Cannes, covering both theatrical and digital releases.
