Masked thugs ‘shine torch in eyes of victims’ before launching homophobic attacks in Bristol park

A man has been arrested and at least one more is being hunted in connection with a string of attacks apparently targeting men in Bristol.

At least four victims suffered similar assaults in the city’s Castle Park over a five-day period ending on December 5.

They involved two or more suspects who approached each victim at night, shining a light in their eyes before assaulting them.

In at least two cases the victims – who are aged between their 20s and 40s – were struck on the head and required hospital treatment.

In one case, he was also hit on the back, shoulder and wrist. Two of the victims were injured but did not require medical treatment.

Descriptions of the suspects were limited due to the time of night, with most of the attacks taking place between 12.30am and 1.30am.

But in each case they were said to be wearing face coverings and dark clothing, and described as male, with one described as white.

The incidents are being treated as linked and police have ramped up their presence in the area, though locals are being urged to stay ‘vigilant’ after dark.

Detectives said they ‘remain open-minded’ about the motive for the attacks but are ‘concerned they may be homophobic in nature’.

‘We’ve made one arrest and are continuing to speak to the victims, review CCTV footage and carry out other inquiries to identify the offenders responsible for these concerning incidents’, DI Alistair Norman said.

The arrested suspect is a 32-year-old man. Police did not say how many others could be involved.

‘There is no place for hate crime in our city and we will not tolerate such behavior,’ Chief Inspector John Shaddick said.

‘We have implemented a number of measures, including the use of our mounted team, dog units and increased regular foot patrols, to enhance visibility, engagement and to deter further criminal activity.’
