First Lady Melania Trump accompanied her husband, President Donald Trump, in welcoming a recently freed Gaza hostage to the White House.
Edan Alexander, 21, an American citizen who was held hostage in Gaza until he was released in May, met with the Trumps in the Oval Office on Thursday.
President Trump thanked him for visiting and said that his wife particularly was concerned about him.
‘The first lady, it was very important to her,’ he said.
He added that he was also worried that Alexander could be killed in an airstrike while he was held in a Hamas tunnel.
The American-Israeli from New Jersey said he received better treatment while in captivity after Trump won the 2024 election.
‘They weren’t too afraid of Biden,’ the president remarked.
Alexander said: ‘I came to thank the person responsible for saving my life. It was deeply moving to be in the White House, the same place where my parents had fought for my release so many times, but this time together with them.’
He was released on May 12 along with 250 others captured by Hamas in the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, that ignited the war.
Alexander said that other hostages still in Gaza must be released, and the president agreed.
