A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after an ‘unexplained’ death not far from Reading Festival.

A 28-year-old woman was found collapsed on a riverbank behind Tilehurst Station on Sunday night after reports of a ‘public cardiac arrest’.

She died in hospital shortly afterwards. The woman has not yet been publicly identified as her family have not yet been informed of the death.

A 39-year-old man from Reading was arrested on suspicion of murder on Sunday. He is still in police custody, and Thames Valley Police say they think the woman and the suspect knew each other.

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Alice Broad said: ‘We understand this unexplained death and arrest will be of concern but we do not believe there is any threat to the wider public.

‘While we have arrested a man on suspicion of murder, the woman’s death is currently unexplained and the suspect remains in our custody.

‘While the deceased woman has not been formally identified as we have not spoken to her next of kin yet, we believe she was staying in the area and knew the suspect.

‘Please be considerate that her next of kin are not aware when posting online.

‘We are in the early stages of a complex investigation but we are following a number of lines of enquiry to establish the circumstances around the death.’

A crime scene has remained in place since Sunday night, but the cordon is expected to be removed later today.

The force are asking anyone with information to get in touch with them or via Crimestoppers anonymously.
