Olivia Rodrigo was unimpressed with what ChatGPT came up with when she and producer Dan Nigro tested the AI tool for potential song titles, calling the suggestions “awful” and reaffirming that AI will never be part of her music-making process.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter recalled the moment she became curious about what AI would suggest for an “Olivia Rodrigo” title. However, the experiment quickly showed her why she prefers to rely on human creativity when writing and developing her songs.
“The closest I’d ever got is that once, me and [producer] Dan [Nigro] were like, ‘God, I wonder what ideas ChatGPT would have for an Olivia Rodrigo title,’ and they’re all [f***ing] awful,” she said.
Although Rodrigo briefly explored AI out of curiosity, she made it clear that she has no plans to incorporate the technology into her actual songwriting process.
“I would never use AI in any of my music,” the Fil-Am pop superstar said. “Absolutely no. Hard line on that.”
The singer’s comments come amid ongoing discussions in the music industry about AI’s role in creative work. As AI-generated songs, lyrics and digital replicas of artists become more common, musicians have continued to debate whether the technology can complement artistic expression or threaten the personal experiences behind music.
Rodrigo recently released her third studio album, “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love,” building on the success of her previous projects. She also surprised fans in August with the release of her standalone track “Serena Joy” and mounted her own all-women music festival “Daisy Chains.”
