All the places in the UK with flood alerts today

Twenty flood alerts are in place as more rain and thunderstorms are forecast for much of the country today.

The Environment Agency which means floods ‘are possible’ – have been issued for parts of Sussex, the midlands, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire, among other areas.

The Met Office, meanwhile, has issued yellow thunderstorm warnings for large parts of England and Scotland and a yellow rain weather warning for the eastern half of Northern Ireland until 9pm tonight.

Yellow thunderstorm and rain warnings suggest flash flooding could occur, potentially causing hazardous driving conditions and damage to homes.

Wales, south west England, and western areas of Northern Ireland are some of the few areas not under the warning today after they experienced the worst of the weather yesterday.

The Met office has forecast a ‘cloudy, damp start’ this morning, ‘particularly for the southeast and across Northern Ireland, where heavy rain is expected.

It will be ‘brighter elsewhere,’ though showers are soon to return and are set to be heavy and thundery’. There is also a risk of hail this afternoon.

Tonight, further outbreaks of rain are expected across central and northern areas, heaviest and most persistent in the northwest.

It will be drier in the south and east with a few isolated showers, the forecaster added.

Rain is predicted across western Scotland, easing through the day, while elsewhere there should be sunny spells and scattered, possibly thundery showers, mainly in the east.

The outlook for Wednesday to Friday is mainly sunny spells and scattered showers as low pressure continues to bring unsettled conditions. But by Thursday there should be less showers and more sunshine, with temperatures at a seasonal average.

Today’s wet weather comes as Southern Water puts a house pipe ban in place to address ‘critically low’ water levels.

The ban has been introduced across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, and came into effect at 9am today.

Residents won’t be able to use a hosepipe to do activities like watering the garden, washing their car, or filling a paddling pool.

Thames Water is set to bring in a ban for households in Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, most of Wiltshire and parts of Berkshire tomorrow, July 22.

The company is not bringing in a ban for the whole of its coverage area, just for the following postcodes: OX, GL, SN, RG4, RG8 and RG9.

Yorkshire Water started a ban on July 11 for the whole of Yorkshire. while South East Water put in restrictions from Friday, July 18 for homes in Kent and Sussex.
