I first met Yvonne Bernstein as a family friend when I was a teenager in the 1980s.
For years, I knew she was a maths teacher but no more about her background other than she had ‘been in Europe during the war’. I also had no idea back then that she had been a hidden child in France throughout most of the Holocaust.
