Plumes of smoke fill the sky after ‘major toxic incident’ breaks out in factory

A fire has ripped through a factory in Wolverhampton, sparking a ‘major taxic incident’ that has sent smoke billowing into the sky.

Fire crews from across the region have raced to the scene on Sunbeam Street after residents reported hearing explosions.

Smoke had reportedly made the air ‘hard to breathe’ and locals have been urged to close their windows and doors.

One nearby school has been sent home with residents being told to avoid the area.

Former labor councillor Paul Birch, who has an office near the scene, said it is a ‘major toxic incident’.

Birch, who is the managing director of Wolverhampton record label Revolver Records, told BirminghamLive it began at around 7.20am.

He added: ‘Residents are advised to stay in doors and close their windows as a major toxic incident is emerging.’

In a statement, West Midlands Fire Service said: ‘Shortly after 7.30am on Wednesday (January 14), we responded to Sunbeam Street, near the junction Upper Villiers Street in Blakenhall, Wolverhampton.

‘We currently have eight fire engines, a 4×4 brigade response vehicle and a hydraulic aerial platform in attendance.

‘Firefighters from Bilston, Fallings Park, Tipton, Willenhall, Haden Cross, Wednesbury, Dudley and Walsall are at the scene. The first crew arrived at the incident within three minutes of being mobilised.

‘This is a fire in a factory building. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are currently tackling the fire using hose reel jets.

‘This is a live incident. Please avoid the area whilst we work at the scene as there is significant disruption. If you live or work in the area, please close your doors and windows.’
