Police hunt two prisoners who escaped from HMP Hollesley Bay in Suffolk

Police are searching for two burglars who have absconded from HMP Hollesley Bay in Suffolk.

James Dooley, aged 23, was reported missing from the open prison in the early hours of this morning.

Dooley is serving a sentence of six years and three months for a number of burglary offenses and intent to pervert the course of justice.

He is described by police as white, 6ft 1in tall and with brown hair.

He has links to the Wood Green area of north London, the Waltham Cross area of Hertfordshire

Andrew Cash, 32, was also reported missing to police.

Cash is serving a sentence of six-and-a-half years for burglary offenses.

He is described by police as white, 6ft 1in tall, of medium build and with brown hair.

Cash has links to the areas of Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds and also Southampton.

Up to 655 prisoners are accommodated within 10 Houses at HMP Hollesley Bay set over 85 acres on the Suffolk coast.

According to The Howard League, the category D open prison had originally housed a colonial college to prepare men to emigrate usually to Australia, before becoming a labor colony in 1905.

Category D prisons offer open conditions and house those who can be reasonably trusted not to try to escape.

There is a sports center, offering prisoners qualifications in healthy living, fitness, and first aid, and some can coach with a local football project.

Prisoners can also learn to drive, access the local libraries, colleges and university as well as cook for themselves in self service accomodations.

Prisoners are typically given Release On Temporary license (ROTL) to work in the community or go on home leave, with orders to return to the prison by nightfall.

The majority of Category D prisoners will be towards the end of their sentence, and are used to prepare them for their eventual release.
