A student has died after suffering a medical emergency at a school in South Tyneside this morning.

Emergency services are at the scene of the incident at St Wilfrid’s RC College in South Shields shortly after 9.15 am this morning.

St Wilfrid’s RC College confirmed that a medical emergency had occurred on site.

In a statement, headteacher Catherine Lennox said: ‘As you may already be aware, we have had a medical episode in school this morning.

‘Sadly, the student involved has passed away. Our entire school community is deeply saddened, and we will continue to come together to support one another at this incredibly difficult time.

‘Our school community joins us in sending thoughts and prayers to the family and those affected.’

Ms Lennox added that the school will be closed for the rest of the day, and asked locals to respect the family’s privacy at this time ‘hold them in their thoughts and prayers’.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: ‘We were called to an incident this morning on Temple Park Road in South Shields at 9:17am.

‘We dispatched two ambulance crews, one critical care specialist paramedic, one clinical team leader and were supported by our colleagues at Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).’
