Remains found as police dig for clues of missing mother who vanished 19 years ago

A mother vanished nearly 20 years ago. Today, human remains were found by police digging in dense shrubland in the shadow of Leicester’s King Power stadium.

Malgorzata Wnuczek was last seen catching a bus home from working at Peter Jackson Logistics into Leicester city center.

The last contact she had with her family, who affectionally referred to her as Gosia, was by text message on 29 May 2006. 

On Thursday, specialist officers digging in shrubland by the River Soar found human remains.

It is unknown whether the remains are those of Ms Wnuczek, with further forensic tests needed to establish their identity, the force said.

Malgorzata had a three-year-old daughter named Ola who was left behind when she vanished.

In June 2023, information provided by Polish police led to searches of the River Soar for any clue as to what happened to the mother.

This included looking for any personal possessions or potentially a body.

A 39-year-old man was arrested in the Greater Manchester area on suspicion of assisting an offender and perverting the course of justice. He was later released with no further action.

DS Jenni Greenway, the senior investigating officer, said: ‘While I appreciate this news may come as a shock to the community, I hope this discovery will provide us with information that helps us understand what may or may not have happened to Malgorzata.

‘Officers are in contact with her family and are providing support to them at what is undoubtedly a difficult time.

‘Officers will remain in the Watkin Road area to carry out further work and also provide reassurance to those living nearby.’
