A serious nuclear incident in the highest risk category took place at a naval base on the west coast of Scotland earlier this year, it has been revealed.

The Faslane base, formally known as HMNB Clyde, is where the Royal Navy keeps all its submarines including nuclear-powered vessels and others armed with Trident nuclear missiles.

Figures reported by the Herald show a Category A event, the most serious type of Nuclear Site Event Report (NSER), took place between January 1 and April 22 this year.

The designation means the incident has an ‘actual or high potential for radioactive release to the environment’.

It was the second time in two years an event in the top category has been recorded at the base, according to the newspaper.

The Ministry of defense has not yet responded to a request for comment.

It has not disclosed whether the Category A event this year involved an ‘actual’ release of radioactive material into the environment or just a ‘high potential’ for one.

Reacting to the news, the X account of the SNP posted: ‘It would be great if the UK Government could NOT leak radioactive waste into Scottish water, thanks.’

Last weekend, the Guardian reported radioactive water from a separate nearby base was allowed to leak into the sea due to burst pipes.

The Coulport depot where the incident took place is home to the UK’s nuclear bomb arsenal.
