‘Several injured’ after bus crash near London Victoria station

Passengers, a bus driver and pedestrians have reportedly been injured after a serious crash outside London Victoria station during peak rush hour.

Part of Victoria Street outside the London Victoria Tube station has been cordoned off following a serious collision this morning after a bus mounted the pavement.

The alarm was raised at about 8.20am following reports of an incident involving a bus.

Emit Suker, 47, said he saw the bus coming from Westminster ‘going really fast and [it] came off the road.’

‘There were about 15, 16 people inside the bus. People were screaming – it was terrible,’ he said.

Another eyewitness said they saw ‘a woman on the floor with loads of people around her’ after hearing ‘a massive crash.’

The London Ambulance Service said in a statement: ‘We were called at 8.20am today (4 September) to reports of a road traffic collision on Victoria Street, Westminster.

‘We have sent resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, advanced paramedics, a paramedic in a fast response car, a clinical team manager, an incident response officer and a command support vehicle. We’ve also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.

‘The incident is ongoing and we are working with our emergency services partners.’

There have been no reports of fatalities, and no arrests have been made.

The Met Police told Metro it cannot confirm the number of injuries yet, but it is understood that several people were hurt, including bus passengers and pedestrians.

It is thought the injured people have been taken to hospital.

Footage shows the bus number 24 to Hampstead Heath crashed on the pavement on Allington Street, with its windscreen smashed.

A video taken from the balcony of a nearby office tower block shows the emergency services gathered around the double decker, which appears to have veered slightly to the left pavement.

A spokesperson for Met Police said: ‘Police are responding to reports of a collision at around 08:20hrs on Thursday, 4 September in Victoria Street, SW1 involving a bus and a number of pedestrians.

‘Officers, the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance are on scene.

‘Several pedestrians and passengers on the bus are understood to be injured and are in the process of being transported to hospital, we await further information. There are no reported fatalities.

‘The driver of the bus has been taken to hospital. We await an update on his condition.

‘At this early stage in the investigation, no arrests have been made.

‘The road remains closed. All vehicles are diverted at this time.’

Rosie Trew, TfL’s head of bus service delivery, said: ‘Our thoughts are with the people who have been injured following a bus incident at Victoria Street.

‘We are working with the police and the operator, Transport UK, to urgently investigate this incident.

‘This must have been a distressing incident for everyone involved and we have support available for anyone affected.’
