Snow, rain and winds as high as 70mph – Storm Bert has engulfed Britain,forcing flight arrivals at Newcastle Airport to be delayed and diverted.

The airport’s arrivals board shows flights being diverted to locations such as Edinburgh and Belfast, with a flight from London Heathrow cancelled.

It comes after multiple yellow weather warnings for rain and wind have been released for the next 48 hours.

The Met Office issued an amber alert for heavy snow and ice between 7am and 5pm today in areas across Scotland, where 10-20cm is likely on ground above 200 metres and potentially as much as 20-40cm on hills above 400 metres.

In Ireland, the meteorological service has issued a a rare red warning for heavy rain in two areas of the country tomorrow.
