Three people have been killed after a plane plunged into a river in the US.

The small aircraft was flying above the Platte River in Nebraska and crashed into the water south of Fremont at 8.15pm yesterday, according to local police.

The bodies of three people have been recovered. It’s not yet known what caused the crash.

Speaking at a press conference, Sgt. Brie Frank of the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed that there were three people in the plane and all had died.

Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims.

The sheriff’s office said the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will now oversee the investigation.

The crash follows a spate of aircraft tragedies in the last few weeks.

Earlier this month the president of Siemens’ Spanish branch, Agustín Escobar, his wife and three children, and a pilot were killed after a helicopter crashed in the Hudson in New York.

And last Saturday a family travelling in a small private plane to the Catskills for a birthday celebration and Passover died after their aircraft crashed.

All six people in the plane, which included distinguished doctors, died in the accident.
