Trial for accused killer of Fil-Am nurse postponed to 2026

The trial for Bryce Schubert, the man accused of killing Filipino American nurse Melissa Jubane of Beaverton, has been postponed to March 31, 2026. 

Jubane, 32, was reported missing on Sept. 4, 2024, after failing to show up for her shift at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. 

Her body was found two days later and Schubert, Jubane’s neighbor, was arrested on suspicion of her murder.

Schubert, 27, has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping and abuse of corpse.

Initially set for Sept. 9 this year, the trial was delayed due to scheduling conflicts and additional preparation time requested by Schubert’s defense attorneys. 

Greg Scholl, one of Schubert’s defense attorneys, told the Washington County Circuit Court on Feb. 26 that due to a full court calendar and the complex nature of the case, more time was needed to prepare for the defense.

“Discovery is voluminous and complicated and involves large amounts of digital discovery,” Scholl wrote in a court filing, as reported by KOIN News. “The defense is engaged in ongoing discussions with the prosecution in this case on more than one topic.”

While the details of the case remain scarce, prosecutors stated that Schubert used a weapon during the alleged crime and was “deliberately cruel,” according to KGW8 News.

Court records, including the search warrants, probable cause affidavit and summary of evidence have been sealed by the judge.

Since Melissa Jubane’s death, local community groups have been active in their pursuit of justice for the Fil-Am nurse, holding protest rallies outside the Washington County Courthouse during the case hearings.

GABRIELA Portland, one of the rally organizers, has been leading courthouse vigils and urging the community to join them.

The group has encouraged the public to attend the next hearing, scheduled for May 19.

“GABRIELA Portland REFUSE(S) TO BACK DOWN even as the court system attempts to drag out this case and erase Melissa from our memory,” the group said in a social media post.
