President Donald Trump avoided all questions around the ballooning Jeffrey Epstein controversy while signing a cryptocurrency bill he said was named after himself.
Trump refused to take questions from reporters before and after signing the Genius Act in the White House on Friday afternoon. The Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins Act establishes the first-ever federal rules for stablecoins, which are cryptocurrencies linked to the US dollar.
‘The Genius Act, they named it after me,’ joked Trump in front of crypto leaders, Republican lawmakers and his supporters.
It was his only public event of the day.
Trump’s Justice Department on Friday also asked a federal judge to unseal grand jury testimony from Epstein’s prosecution. The administration also requested the unsealing of grand jury testimony in the case of Epstein’s accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving time for child sex trafficking and other convictions.
The president on Thursday evening wrote on his Truth Social platform that he directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to ask court permission to release any and all grand jury testimony, ‘based on the ridiculous amount of publicity given to Jeffrey Epstein’.
‘This SCAM, perpetuated by the Democrats, should end, right now!’ he wrote.
