Donald Trump wasted no opportunity to take a swipe at his presidential predecessor Joe Biden after he stopped a young child from falling off the stage at an event in Nevada.
The US president had been making a speech in Las Vegas about his no tax on tips and no tax on overtime policies, inviting a couple who had benefitted from the incentives to join him onstage.
Introducing them as Sandra, ‘a waitress in a casino’, and Brad, ‘a hard-working Las Vegas metropolitan police officer’, Trump said they had ‘saved ‘saved thousands of dollars thanks to no tax on tips and no tax on overtime, and they’re investing their money into Sandra’s education’.
He added they had opened ‘Trump accounts for their two young children’, who then joined their parents onstage as the president called them a ‘beautiful family’.
But the older of their two sons appeared unimpressed at being in the presence of the leader of the free world and, as his mum took to the podium to speak, the child ran off.
Trump quickly went after him to stop the toddler in his tracks, before cupping his hands to shout to the watching crowd: ‘I don’t want him to be Biden and fall off the stage.’
Ouch. The comment certainly went down well in the room, as laughter rippled through the crowd and the runaway toddler was returned to his dad.
While it’s not clear whether he was referring to a specific incident, Biden did suffer a few notable trips during his time in The White House.
The 83-year-old former president stumbled down a flight of stairs at the G7 summit in Japan in May 2023, as he visited the Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima.
That same year he also tripped twice on the steps of his Air Force One plane in the space of a fortnight — once while leaving Warsaw, Poland on a whirlwind eastern European trip, and again while he was departing Alabama.
In June 2023, then-President Biden also had to be helped up after falling during the graduation ceremony at the United States Air Force Academy in El Paso County, Colorado.
Trump taking a swipe at Joe Biden is nothing new — and he’s certainly never wasted an opportunity to do so.
Whether it’s replacing his photo in his Presidential Walk of Fame with one of an autopen— an act blasted as ‘petty and disrespectful’ by his critics — or simply referring to him as ‘the worst president in the history of the United States’ after he pulled out of the race for The White House in 2024.
‘There has never been a president who has done such damage to our country,’ he said. ‘From energy independence to letting in millions and millions of illegal immigrants. We will fix what he has done.’
On stage in Nevada he left it at the one Biden sideswipe, leaving Sandra to apologize and blame ‘having a little mum brain going on’ before she went on to thank Trump for helping her family ‘and the families of millions of hardworking Americans’.
She then brought her runaway toddler back to the podium, where she brought the house down by telling Trump: ‘Thank you for my Trump account’.
It’s been a busy week for the president, because as well as taking potshots at the former prez, he’s also been hitting the golf course — where he claimed two more trophies after scoring a remarkable two-under-par round.
The commander-in-chief said that he completed the Trump National Golf Club Bedminster course in just 70 shots to win its senior and super senior championships — quite the feat given the course has a par of 72.
True to form, Trump announced the result on Truth Social alongside footage of his alleged winning shot.
‘Thank you very much to all of those who participated,’ he wrote. ‘I won with a score of 70, and am so honoured in that, unlike the rest of the field, I’m given very little time to practice, because I’m focused on many other things.’
As modest as ever, he added: ‘It’s called TALENT, and I have it, and they don’t!’
